8 steps to write an effective poem
1.) Find a quiet place to write. You will need a place that you can be creative and not distracted. When there is noise it is difficult to concentrate and the energy that is inside you will not be freely expressed. It’s like trying to read something when the kids are crying and the radio is on. The ears will pick up these sounds and then your brain will inadvertently focus on whatever the white noise is and not your deepest thoughts.
2.) Make sure you have all your materials. If you decide to write your thoughts on paper, make sure there is enough paper. I would recommend using a pencil to start with. And have at least three spare pencils or an eraser. If you should decide to use a computer then open up Microsoft word. I have found that this is sometimes a better way to go, because you don’t have to erase so much. All you have to do is hit the backspace or delete button!
3.) Close your eyes and breathe The best way to get your brain in the mode to write is relax and do a few minutes of deep breathing to clear out those other thoughts. The kids, the chores will wait. Clear your mind. Don’t think of anything but the feelings that you feel. A good five minutes should be enough. Sometimes you may need ten minutes. This is okay.
4.) Jot down words then phrases that instantly come to your mind. Don’t worry about putting the project together just yet. Just express in a word that you feel. As an example. If you feel relieved or feel peace, than jot down the word peace, relieved. If you feel sad, jot down that word too. Do these until you have at least two pages of words or phrases like the peace of flowing waters
6.) Make at least three drafts. The more drafts of a completed poem idea will help you decide which one you are the most happy about. Take your time with this. Maybe you can walk away for an hour and come back and re-read the drafts and decide which one to use. These drafts are important because you can add or subtract form it once you have read it. As an example. After I re-read “the peace I find in you, brings me overwhelming joy.” I may want to change it to “I find peace when we are together. Joy fills my heart."
7.) Regroup, Re-read this can be a pain to re read it a third time. However, I have found that some of my best work comes from following these steps. When you regroup. I don’t recommend you get out of your quiet place. Instead, go back to closing your eyes and doing the breathing exercises. Maybe make yourself some tea and stretch a little. Rub your hands and fingers. After writing or typing for so long they become cramped. You don’t want your focus to go to your discomfort. You need to keep your focus on the inner creative you.
8.) Save and Publish Hooray! You are ready to print or publish your beautiful interesting masterpiece. Take one more look over, check for spelling and make sure you save it. This way you have an original for yourself. Happy writing.

I think our writing comes to us from various levels of our being. There is the intellectual stuff, such as when we're endeavouring to write an article. There is the more free-flowing essay-type where we bring in a different type of creativity - particularly more visualization. And then there is the stuff which seems 'to work us' rather than we creating it. This is where the really 'deep and meaningful' comes into play. This last results in our best poety.
Of course, there could be many shades, many layers of depth from which we write. I'm just endeavouring to make a point here.
This much I will tell you. As a person who has a natural penchant for writing poems, you're probably a 'sensitive,' and are very likely to have certain gifts of mediumship you never expected. That is, you'e of a spiritual nature. But then again, you might already know this.
Keep writing.
My inspiration comes from all around whether quiet or noisy, from things I am experiencing at the time or have felt in the past. Sometimes quietness can cloud my writing - as does noise...so all I have to remember is to make sure I always have a pen and paper to hand to jot down my thoughts and ideas as they come in to mind. I really enjoyed reading this hub. Very useful information, very interesting and voted up!
Great Hub had to vote up and useful. I wrote a poem this morning and I was inspired by the notification of the upcoming contest. I have to find my journal because once the pump has been primed I can feel that so many of them that I have thought about but didn't write down are coming back. Good suggestions for keeping on task and focusing on what's important and how to eliminate what's not. Thanks.
