What is in a name?

Have you ever wondered what your name means? I was born into this world on a rainy day in May of 1972. My mother would tell me later that I am the name sake of my beloved grandmother Catherine and her middle name was “Joanne”.

She spelled it with a capital A, instead of lower case. I think over the years, when I would hear some other beautiful and exotic names like for instance.; the name Jewel, Victoria, Faith or Anna.

I would wish my name was different and it would not sound so plain. Then one day, while I was working as a customer service rep at a local store. A customer said that he loved my name. He told me in the bible it means.

God is gracious., I am a gift from the Lord. Its origin is Hebrew.

I think this was the first time I felt good about my birth name. I was having a tough day and this information really cheered me up. I felt so special and so loved by God. That I was his gift. I like to think I am a gift from the Lord.

I know my mom always made sure to make me feel like her gift from God. As I get older, I have prayed and asked God to always help me to be a gift to others. And to show me the way where I can see the many gifts I have in my heart and share it. I prayed that I would honor him by being cheerful, kind and try to forgive when it is called for.

What a great feeling it is to know that you are a gift from God. We all are. I find it to be quite interesting that most names are of Hebrew or Aramaic in origin. I think it makes me stop for a minute and contemplate how the origin of *us* first began. We are the ancestors of the Hebrew people. We are sons and daughters of Abraham.

Our names that we have here, I am sure will change to a special one that only God has chosen for us. This will be our new name for our Spiritual selves. I hope and pray to always be the gift that God has intended for me to be.

"A Rose by any other name would still smell as sweet."

I was raised catholic. At 13, I was confirmed, not that it matters or means much to me or to anyone else, But, I was given the chance to take another name so I took the name "Gabriel" after the angel who appeared to Mary at the time of her conception.

Even though I am no Arch-Angel like my name sake. I am a spirit created in the image of God. I serve as Gabriel serves.

Beautiful hub as always Joanne. As for me, I am not fond of my real first name which I am not ready to reveal publicly on Hubpages, but I love my middle name which is what I use here and the second name is a variation of my first :-)

But I have to say, when I see someone's name like a Hubpages writer I love (like you), it makes me happy no matter how "ordinary" the name might sound. So if you had a name like Bob or Sam, it would sound beautiful because of what you made it. When I see your name in the notifications list, the rare times I get to that email these days, I get excited and come over to see what new jewel you have crafted.

Thanks again, Al.
